Apocalypto: More Of The Same From Gibson?

December 8, 2006

If I had the slightest curiosity about Apocalypto, mostly due to its potential as another film about history, that inquisitiveness was killed by this Chicago Tribune review. Mel Gibson’s “new” creation looks to be a kind of Patriot: Redux, which was a kind of Braveheart: Redux. I loved these lines from the reviewer, Michael Phillips: “Gibson clearly has established his priorities as a director. History is gore, plus a few hearthside family interludes. The trick is instilling the audience with enough bloodlust to make it work.” – TL

Update 1: Slate.com’s Dana Stevens essentially agrees with Michael Phillips. – TL

Update 2: A local writer in Chicago, Steve Prokopy, finds the movie fascinating (review is about 1/3 down the page). “Apocalypto moved me to my core,” he said. – TL
