A Long Time Coming: The Illegitimate Growth of Unpaid Internships

April 3, 2010

This has been a long time coming. I hope that Hilda Solis and her crew crack down big time on this practice—a problem likely to grow in this recessionary-depression period. In light of the fact that I will be out of the job soon, the thought had crossed my mind that I might have to retrain in some fashion. And that retraining, in the context of a family, could not occur in an environment where “free labor” was an expectation. Aside from my personal problems, I had noticed a kind of abuse in unpaid employment during the period that pre-health students have to build resumes as undergraduate. The rising cost of higher education only increases the opportunity cost for these and other students in an environment where 6-12 months of “volunteer” service is the norm. – TL
