Campus Drug Abuse

April 11, 2007

I had no idea this was a problem, but apparently prescription drug abuse is rampant – basically an epidemic – on college and university campuses. Statistics embedded in the link above point to Oxycontin as the prescription drug of choice. Of course the old standbys, such as alcohol, are still popular. Here are two sentences that jumped out at me from the weblog entry:

– “49 percent of surveyed college students admitted to binge drinking or abusing substances both legal and illicit.”

. . . Okay, I follow.

– “While the abuse of more commonly acknowledged drugs like cocaine and marijuana has not seen significant increases in recent years, the number of students using prescription drugs for recreational purposes has risen exponentially.”

Cocaine as more common?! But back to Oxycontin, am I just out of touch (a common refrain in recent posts)? Probably. – TL
