Robert T. Stafford: Republican Education Champion?

December 27, 2006

Obituaries for Robert T. Stafford, an education advocate and supporter of low-cost student loans, are available via The Boston Globe, New York Times, CNN.com, and his hometown paper, The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus. All of the obituaries noted that Stafford was a kind of education “champion,” but none detailed his education-related activities apart from helping renew the Guaranteed Student Loan Program (renamed after him). What else did he accomplish? What is his real place in the history of American education? It’s not that I don’t believe Stafford to be a noteworthy figure, but rather that the obituaries neglect to tell us range of his activities on behalf of education. – TL
