Competition For Hersey’s Hiroshima?

December 20, 2006

UPI reported a few days ago on a new book that chronicles the situation in Nagasaki a few weeks after its destruction via a U.S. atomic bomb. Titled First Into Nagasaki, the book is a collection of articles edited by Anthony Weller, but first written by his father, George Weller. The elder Weller was a Chicago Daily News reporter, and the articles were barred from publication when first submitted. First Into Nagasaki is published by Crown and will be available on Dec. 26, 2006.

I wonder if Weller’s account will be as good as John Hersey’s Hiroshima, first published in 1946? Hersey’s is short enough to be of use in the classroom, and vivid enough to capture the reader’s imagination: it is no mere dry account of events. -TL
