Tuesday History Trivia

December 19, 2006

Like yesterday, I’m treating everyday as Friday this week and posting trivia. So, on this day in:

– 1946, “War breaks out in Indochina as Ho Chi Minh attacks French in Hanoi.” [Source: HNN]
– 1996, “The school board of Oakland, Calif., voted to recognize Black English, also known as ‘ebonics.'” [Source: NYT]
– 1997, “Titanic, the highest-grossing movie of all-time, opened in American theaters.” [Source: NYT]
– 1998, “President Bill Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives for perjury and obstruction of justice.” [Source: NYT]

It’s hard to believe that the ‘ebonics’ controversy was only ten years ago. In terms of the Culture Wars, it seems like 50 years ago. – TL
