Oxford Revisited

November 27, 2006

A few weeks back, I posted a story on Oxford’s relevance to ongoing debates about the corporatization of the university – now spreading to Europe. This new Guardian Unlimited story, however, has revised my view of the situation there. Apparently the debate at Oxford is really a rather technical one, about whether the institution should remain a kind of worker’s cooperative or become a charitable trust. Ironically, it appears that in becoming the latter, Oxford will have to create a board of trustees with expanded powers. In sum, to become more like a charity it will have to act more like a British business. – TL
