The Difficulties Of First-Generation College Students

November 20, 2006

Marcella Bombardieri of The Boston Globe recently wrote a morality tale about two women from the Boston area who encountered multiple problems as first-generation college students. Titled “Two Who Were Overwhelmed Are Moving On,” the piece chronicles the myriad difficulties the women faced as students ignorant (I mean this charitably) of how higher education ‘works.’ It’s no wonder that graduation rates from working class and minority populations are low – to dovetail with my posting from this past Saturday. – TL
