NCLB: An Election Factor?

November 8, 2006

As I perused the morning paper for election results and analysis, I noticed a curious absence: education. In the best analysis I have read so far, Michael Tackett’s “Voters Send Message In Victory For Democrats” in the Chicago Tribune, no mention was made of discontent with No Child Left Behind.

Is this because it was simply not a factor? Perhaps. It may have been just one more bucket of water in what Dan Axelrod, Democratic consultant, called a “wave” of issues that gained momentum and “broke” last night.

What will Democrats do with NCLB? Will it be repealed, and consigned to the “dustbin of history?” Has it been a failure? Does NCLB just need to be tweaked or reformulated?

Or is education again merely a political football – used in campaigns but forgotten when elected officials gain office? – TL
