News: University of Phoenix Course Offerings Grow

September 15, 2006

I saw on The Chronicle of Higher Education‘s website a story about how the University of Phoenix (UP) is expanding its humanities offerings. Apparently this is occurring because UP is beginning to serve younger students, who are demanding the courses.

My questions about this are more philosophical. For instance, is it possible to educate someone in the humanities without face-to-face contact? Can a point truly be communicated accurately without one or the other witnessing nonverbals? We are not just minds, but those promoting the internet for education purposes seem to think so. The internet diminishes humanities education. It is possible to teach and learn via the internet, but we must accept the fact that it’s a substandard education. – TL
